CLIMOS, alongside the Climate-Health Cluster, is gearing up to participate in the upcoming ‘Research Perspectives on the Health Impacts of Climate Change’ high-level conference, organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD). Taking place on February 19th and 20th, 2024, in Brussels, Belgium with the aim to shed light on the critical intersection of climate change and global health.

We will be presenting two posters at the conference:

CLIMOS poster: A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL DRIVERS OF SAND FLY-BORNE DISEASES IN EUROPE – THE CLIMOS PROJECT

In recent decades, sand fly-borne diseases like leishmaniasis and phleboviruses have become a significant public health and veterinary concern, leading to the formation of research consortia such as EDEN, EDENext, and Vectomet. CLIMOS, (Climate Monitoring and Decision Support Framework for the Detection and Mitigation of Sand Fly Diseases), is a project aiming to address this issue, bringing together 29 partners from 16 countries. By characterising various environmental and epidemiological factors associated with sand fly presence and infection rates, CLIMOS seeks to develop predictive models and an Early Warning System for these diseases. Additionally, CLIMOS aims to integrate big data from satellites and ground-level surveillance to map disease-carrying insect locations, incorporate economic and social sciences for impact assessments, and engage stakeholders and citizens in scenario development for future health impacts.

CLIMOS together with the Climate-Health Cluster: “HEALTH IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE: A WAY FORWARD WITH THE CLIMATE-HEALTH CLUSTER.”

This poster dives into the urgent need to address the escalating health risks associated with climate change, this continuing challenges are not only aggravating social inequalities and food- and water security, but also increasing the incidence of infectious, zoonotic and non-communicable diseases.

The Climate-Health Cluster, comprises six Horizon Europe projects (BlueAdapt, CATALYSE, CLIMOS, HIGH Horizons, IDAlert, and TRIGGER). Organised by project coordinators, the cluster employs working groups to address key topics, including data analysis, communication, ethics, Early Warning Systems, and indicator development, to provide robust information to policymakers and stakeholders, ultimately fostering evidence-based decision-making, and strengthening EU and global policies.

As part of our engagement at the conference, we’ll also be hosting a dynamic workshop on Early Warning Systems (EWS) and numerical tools for climate and health applications. This interdisciplinary session will feature insightful discussions on predictive models and research approaches within the Cluster, highlighting key methods and research gaps.

Objectives:

  • To share methods and research approaches within the Cluster with respect to predictive models and EWS
  • To provide insights into potential synergies and opportunities for shared learning across projects within the Health Cluster.
  • To identify key research gaps related to methods.

Through initiatives like these, CLIMOS and the Climate-Health Cluster are paving the way for evidence-based decision-making, policy formulation, and capacity-building in climate change and health research.
